Concluding part of the O2 Joggler Mumsnet trial

Hi everyone, thanks for logging on to the second live web chat about the O2 Joggler. You should be able to enter your name and start typing your comments from 1.00 onwards. Comments come to us first so we can filter out any swearing etc, and then we post them so that everyone can see them. I’ll be answering as many questions as possible and moderating, but like last time I’ve also got people from O2 with me to help me on other questions you may have. The message board will remain here on mum-e.co.uk as a post so anyone who comes to the blog after today can see our discussion.

You should have received the agenda prior to this, it worked pretty well last time to keep us on track so here is today’s:

Part 1: Getting a sense of how it is working in family life.

1. Two weeks in, is the O2 Joggler having a positive impact on your family life? Why/why not?

2. What are the three things on it that you are using the most?

3. O2 have recently launched a pay and go package for families called the ‘Bolt On’, which offers unlimited calls, text messages and picture messages between you and your family (up to 5 members) for £7.50 per month. Would you consider the Bolt on useful for family life alongside the Joggler?

Part 2: Refining what you want next/what is most important to you from the Joggler and Calendar

4. What are the three things you’d like it to do that it doesn’t currently?
a. We know Calendar syncing is one – what do they mean by this i.e.

1. Do you want to synchronise your/your family’s personal calendar (i.e. outlook) with the whole of your O2 Calendar?

2. Do you want to synchronise selected events from your personal calendar with your family on your O2 Calendar?

3. Or do you just want to be able to invite your O2 calendar from other calendars I.e. outlook & visa versa?

b. Do you use/ see the benefit in streaming music photos and video from the home pc or laptop directly to the Joggler?

  1. gigglinggoblin Says:

    1. Its not really had any impact on family life, the only people using it are me and dh

    2. News, weather and connect and play

    3. No, we get free calls from orange so it wouldnt make much difference

    4. text other networks with calendar details, web browser (even if its just a limited one so I can check emails), voip

    1. Yes, if you could transfr thee details from my mobile calendar I would be more likely to use the joggler

    2. Not sure I would ever use that

    3. Bit lost on that one!

    b. This is probably what we use most, we record things on our pc so can watch them back on the joggler while we are cooking which is brill. Would be better if theere was a fast forward function rather than just a skip.

  2. gigglinggoblin Says:

and the other questions I got in my email arent on here (that I can see!)

    4. O2 have also had some more ideas about improvements, would any of these be useful?

    a. Traffic. We are considering adding extra functionality which would provide text showing real time traffic incidents, accidents, traffic jams for their region. What’s the view on this ?

I wouldnt use this as I rarely drive very far. I would also wonder if it would be much use as you cant take it with you so you would miss updates

    b. News and Sport – we are considering adding a video news/sports news roundup. Would they use these apps more if they had this functionality?

Not interested in sport, I read the news but find it frustrating there are only a few stories, I like thee funnies best and you never feature these.

    c. On portability we are specifically considering a docking station and the Joggler screen would have about a 4 hour battery life before it needed charging. Are there any issues with this? Will the screen get lost in the home? Do the benefits outweigh any disadvantages?

I would like to be able to move it but 4 hours isnt much, it would def run out every time!

    d. Calendar on the mobile:

    · Do you use a calendar on your mobile currently?

    Yes

    · Do you use it to manage your own events, or do you also use it to manage events for other people in your family?

Mostly me but I keep track of others so I can remind them

    · Would you like to be able to see your O2 Calendar on your mobile?

Yes, I might actually use it then!

    · Would you expect to be able to just view events or also add new ones?

Would have to be able to add if I was going to stop using my mobile caendar

    e. Watch again TV – would you like to be able to watch TV on you Joggler for example on iPlayer? Would you be interested in being able to stream programmes from their main TV to the Joggler? When/why would you use this?

Definately, would be a big advantage

  3. oh god its me
    i forgot
    should haveused the JOggler

  4. I posted all my stuff on the link – is that ok?

  5. That’s great, thanks very much.

  6. Sorry but can’t join in the live discussions as am at work at that time. :-(
Have read through it though and here are my own answers to the questions raised.

Part 1: Getting a sense of how it is working in family life.

    1. Two weeks in, is the O2 Joggler having a positive impact on your family life? Why/why not?
To some degree yes, I am using it to keep track of appointments and I really like the text reminders. Problem is the calendar is extremely slow to use through the joggler, despite saying it has a good wireless connection, it is so slow that I can’t wait for it and end up using the laptop to enter dates into the calendar, which defeats the point of the joggler really. If the wireless connection is good, why is it so slow to load anything??

    2. What are the three things on it that you are using the most? Calendar through the laptop, Clock/Date/ Sorry, thats about it because everything is so slow

    3. O2 have recently launched a pay and go package for families called the ‘Bolt On’, which offers unlimited calls, text messages and picture messages between you and your family (up to 5 members) for £7.50 per month. Would you consider the Bolt on useful for family life alongside the Joggler? YES – am definately thinking this would be worth doing as all of us are on O2.

Part 2: Refining what you want next/what is most important to you from the Joggler and Calendar. To speed it up! Also some of the text reminders arrive after the time?? This obviously is no good. Why is that?

    4. What are the three things you’d like it to do that it doesn’t currently? BE MOBILE!! Interactive family quiz/games, Address Book/Note/Memo/Reminder facility.
    a. We know Calendar syncing is one – what do they mean by this i.e. Not worried as this calendar is only electronic one I use!!

Did try it but without much success. Can see its use if the joggler was actually portable. THIS IS A MUST!

  7. Sorry forgot live chat.
In third week and am totally addicted to Joggler, have bragged profusely to all my friends though they seemed to think I was taking up new form of exercise.
Spend loads time just reading news, checking weather and on sudoku (though congrats message still annoying). Is pretty slow at opening different apps and hoped for more updates after speed of messaging app.
1, Family still slow at putting events on calendar tho getting better, find I need small child present to tell me how to put in events and not grasped this streaming thing at all! Simple to find instructions would be good.
    2. As i said am totally addicted to sudoku news and weather reports tho weather always wrong as I’m on the coast and nearest town listed is miles away and inland so never right. Using calendar more but find it bit complicated.
    3. Bolt-on…am really considering this but medium child not keen yet
    2) Not managed to get txt reminders to work yet will get small child on the case sure this would be useful, am using nokia phone calendar & reminders regularly so syncing this would be useful.
Definitely needs to-do list, timer, improved weather locations, localised travel reports (Bideford/Westward Ho! renowned for seasonal traffic hold-ups but doesn’t exist on travel map.) ooh,ooh tide timetable would be REALLY essential to us, (surfing up the pebbleridge not to be recommended).
Don’t know thing about this streaming business, but will attempt to find out & get small child to set it up.
Not sure on portable joggler, small child would nick it and probably lose it at school or something, though would make using it a lot easier as hunching over worktop inserting info not a lot of fun. Would definately consider getting speakers/docking for it if they become available & not to dear.
Overall I absolutely love my Joggler and regularly recommend it(boast) to all my friends about how fantastic it is. Thank you so much for letting me trial it and sorry again for missing the live chat.
    xx

  8. Hi i missed the live chat again(i was working though). But here are my answers to the questions,

    1. Two weeks in, is the O2 Joggler having a positive impact on your family life? Why/why not?
    A. Yes for sure i would have missed so may appointments & kids parties if it was not for the Joggler reminding me. The weather has been right every time i have looked & we have planned plenty of BBQ from the Joggler Weather App :) .
    2. What are the three things on it that you are using the most?
    A. Calender(i agree it needs tweaking to be fantastic though), Music through Connect & Play we have linked it up to our hifi via the speaker/headphones port on back and it sounds FAB now, so the speakers will make a big diffrence & the Weather app.
    3. O2 have recently launched a pay and go package for families called the ‘Bolt On’, which offers unlimited calls, text messages and picture messages between you and your family (up to 5 members) for £7.50 per month. Would you consider the Bolt on useful for family life alongside the Joggler?
    A. Yes but we are all in other network contracts at the moment but when they are due for renewal i will change us all over.
Part 2: Refining what you want next/what is most important to you from the Joggler and Calendar
    4. What are the three things you’d like it to do that it doesn’t currently?
    A. To do list as this will be really helpful to my busy life, a shopping app would be fantastic & some were to put notes in the calender that can be view’d on main calender.
    a. We know Calendar syncing is one – what do they mean by this i.e. Only ever used paper calenders b4 Joggler.
    1. Do you want to synchronise your/your family’s personal calendar (i.e. outlook) with the whole of your O2 Calendar?
    A. N/A
    2. Do you want to synchronise selected events from your personal calendar with your family on your O2 Calendar?
    A. N/A
    3. Or do you just want to be able to invite your O2 calendar from other calendars I.e. outlook & visa versa?
    A. N/A
    b. Do you use/ see the benefit in streaming music photos and video from the home pc or laptop directly to the Joggler?
    A. Very!! as some one is always using the comp/laptop in our house so for me to be able to listen music or watch a film via the joggler while the kids/DH are playing on the laptop etc… is fantastic for me :) i now dont nag them so much and just sit in the kitchen quietly watching my film or listen to the music while im cooking.

Thanks soooooooo muck for the Joggler & look forward to the updates & new apps xoxo Becky.

  9. I am separated from my husband and we have found the O2 calendar fantastic. We have tried Googlemail & ical calendars but neither have worked for us. its great as it means we can both upload events to the online site, we both have text reminders so we know in advance what is happening & can ‘bagsy’ certain days if we want to do things and need the other one to baby sit, all without talking (ie arguing!) with each other. Its so ideal for us, the other options would mean that one person was the administrator and emails were shared as well. Obviously, being separated we don’t want to be able to read each others emails! So the online calendar has worked really well for us, bonus that it is free, wouldnt pay for it but it would encourage me to stay with o2 for the free texts. We both use iphones so it would be nice to have an app which you didnt have to log into to check the dates. Would love to try the Joggler device but think its a bit pricey.
Let me know if you need any more testers, would be glad to take part in any trials.

  10. Do not accept the O2 Joggler’s Internet Radio Update!!

My O2 joggler recently accepted the internet radio update and has since suffered problems.

I can no longer set the date and time manually, nor will it update from the ntp time servers, so I am stuck with an incorrect date and time.

There is no way to revert the update either.

The system has also slowed considerably. The internet radio functionality also seems flawed as sometimes the menus work and other times they don’t.
I seem to have lost my calendar, but it may be that I just have to put the details in again… the problem is I can’t remember the details.

There is a forum at http://forum.o2.co.uk where you can search for joggler to find threads discussing issues, but despite being under the noses of O2, they have not published any technical guidance online as how to resolve the problems.

Finding the correct O2 support person is also difficult. O2 shops are not aware of the problems. Customer services are not used to dealing with joggler queries, and calling them will take you 20 mins waiting for help.
