Hurrah for modern canine breeding technology!
I have the worst dog allergy ever – I literally walk into a doggie house and my eyes start streaming, I start sneezing and wheezing and come up in a vile rash if I so much as go near the thing. The shame of it is that I LOVE dogs – in fact I wanted to be a vet until this allergy kicked in when I was about 15.
Then, at the weekend, my daughter was invited to a birthday party and I totally forgot that the family has a dog. I walked into the house, didn’t notice the dog and was totally fine.
I still didn’t realise the potential pooch crisis brewing until the hostess said to me: “Sorry, I couldn’t get anyone to take the dog today, are you OK?”
I told her I was totally fine and couldn’t believe it and she offered to introduce me properly to their dog, Lola. “We got her because my husband is allergic to dogs and he is totally fine with her,” said the hostess. “She’s a labradoodle.”
For anyone who has avoid the silly dog breed trend (cockapoo is even more ludicrous), a labradoodle is a labrador crossed with a poodle.
Well, I met Lola, cuddled her, she licked me and…not an itch or a sniffle.
So, I am about to call her breeder and tell her I am in the market for a labradoodle.

Luckily the new au pair – let’s call her Angel – is a total fan of dogs and has two at home and can’t wait for the new arrival.
And Not So Alpha Male is beside himself with happiness. Then again, this is the man who, on hearing of my allergy, told me we could never marry because he had always wanted a pet dog. Let’s hope our new puppy is as easy to train and manipulate as he was.
